7 Bible Verses to Meditate on while Baking Bread
Share
Bread making is more than a hobby—it’s an invitation to rest, to trust, and to draw closer to God. As you measure ingredients, feel the transformation of dough in your hands, and wait for it to bubble and rise, consider meditating on these seven Bible verses that remind you of God’s presence in the kitchen.
You could even consider using them as the basis for breath prayer!
1. Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
The majority of flavor and texture in dough develops while both the dough and the baker are at rest. While it might look like nothing is happening in the stillness, you must trust that transformation is taking place.
2. Psalm 62:1
“For God alone my soul in silence waits.”
Again, as you rest together with your dough, trust that God is present with you, providing the sustenance you need as you wait.
3. Matthew 6:11
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
As you prepare your dough, consider all of our ancestors who could not just buy a loaf at the grocery store, but had to rely on God for a hearty harvest and enough grain to last the full year. Thank God for the flour you need to bake and ask God to provide in every area of your life in the days to come.
4. John 6:35
“I am the Bread of Life, whoever comes to me will never go hungry.”
Reflect on the ways God answers our prayer from Matthew 6:11 by providing his own self to us in the form of bread—the Bread we eat at the Communion table and our daily bread all throughout the week.
5. Matthew 13:33
“The kingdom of God is like leaven that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour.”
As the yeast transforms your dough, meditate on the ways God can multiply our small simple offerings to transform the communities we are a part of.
6. Luke 24:30-31
“When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him.”
As you tear open your steaming loaf (or slice it, if you have more self control than me), place yourself in the shoes of those who walked with Jesus on the path to Emmaus. What might it be like to recognize Jesus only in the act of breaking bread?
7. Psalm 34:8
“O taste and see that the Lord is good.”
When you finally taste a slice of your carefully made loaf, close your eyes and marvel at God’s goodness in this tangible, tastable form.
